Mumbai: The Bombay High Court (HC) has said that there is nothing wrong in the use of Aadhaar details on the National Population Register and the Aadhaar number is neither public nor private.

A bench of Justices G P Singhvi and P Sathasivam said that this matter is not affected by the recent Supreme Court verdict, and said that an individual should be given a chance to contest a case before it being taken away.

The HC also referred to the fact that the National Population Register is public and that the Aadhaar number is not private. The court also said that the government has to make it clear that using the Aadhaar number is a private matter and not something that can be used only for identification and not for authentication.

The petitioner who appeared for the National Population Register objected to Aadhaar on the ground of “privacy” and asked to be allowed to contest the case of the National Registration Authority (NRA) in the Supreme Court.

The petitioner asked the court to grant a stay on the notification by the National Registration Authority (NRA ) for about eight months to allow him time to contest the case before the apex court. He also wanted
