A new, high-density wireless network created by researchers at the University of Washington could drastically cut down on traffic by wireless carriers and help extend battery life in phones, tablets and other consumer devices, according to a paper just published in the Journal of Applied Physics.
The new system can provide a network with bandwidth that rival’s traditional phone network and, at the same time, has significantly lower cost per customer.
Researchers at the university’s Seattle lab built a 3-dimensional radio frequency (RF) network comprised of about 250 wireless radio channels spaced at a distance of just 0.1 millimeter apart. The network runs on a low-power millimetre-wave (MIMO) technology capable of transmitting data at 20 gigabits per second (1.5 Gbps).
At the same time, the system uses a form of low-power, low-bandwidth microwave radiation to beam communications signals across the network. The researchers’ network, which is now in the process of being tested in field trials, has far higher capacity than any network deployed by the wireless company Ericsson. While conventional mobile phone networks rely on antennae to send signals to mobile devices, the new system uses a wide variety of wireless antennas that send data at much higher speeds.
“The antennas used in the prototype have a much higher throughput than the ones that currently exist in the telecommunications industry,” senior author James E. Smith, a doctoral student in electrical engineering and computer science, said in a statement. “These are very, very powerful antennas.
