Jesse Smith (6’3″, 195 pounds) is considered one of the fastest and most explosive athletes in the 2017 NFL Draft. However, while it is true that Smith appears fast and explosive when he comes to the football, the fact that Smith is not a big guy at 6’3″ (195 pounds) makes him look smaller than he is.
Smith is quick and agile which allow him to make up for height differences. This allows the former North Carolina guard to have strong hands and move the pocket in the running game. With a thick build, Smith is also explosive in the passing game, and can make the most of tight windows. Smith is not afraid to block, as he showed against North Carolina where he uses his body to bull his way through the hole and keep a tight lid on the receiver to disrupt the quarterback’s vision. Once the line stops the run, it should not be a problem for Smith to finish the play.
On the offensive line, Smith has a decent base, which gives him the ability to hold up and protect against bull rushes. While his short arms allows him to keep his hands on the ground and block, he does not possess great upper body strength, and is not strong enough to consistently anchor against strong bull rushes.
If you will not be using a center as a stopgap, Smith does not provide much value as a blocker, and is often used as a backup. As he comes out of college, Smith will probably play guard in the NFL, at least to start his career with any team. There is certainly potential, but it will most likely come with development as a guard.
Jordon Smith looks to be a late round steal at the 2017 NFL Draft for many teams, and could make an impact as an interior lineman in the NFL. As he does not look as big and explosive as many might expect to see in the NFL Draft, Smith may not appear the imposing player he is in college. While this may be enough to turn many heads, it doesn’t mean that Smith will be much to the average NFL team’s liking. If Smith looks like a mid-round pick, we might not like the pick, but Smith may look like a mid-round pick if he continues to show the same qualities we are expecting, as a run blocker, as well as a pass protector and outside backer. His size however, will not prevent the Jets from picking him early, but he could be an attractive pick
