Does paint go through wetted areas and not dry? What about paint that has gone through the dryer? Why not do both?
The answer to these questions should be simple. But when it comes to safety I don’t know if anyone does.
As far as acrylic paints are concerned, there are 4 main types which can be used for different purposes: Waterproof Acrylic (or Gel Paint)?
Dry Acrylic (or Gel Paint)?
Acrylic Enamel (or Waterproof Aqua)
Waterproof Enamel (or Gel Paint)
We’ll start with waterproof acrylic. We’ll explain about the 4 different types, discuss their uses and their drawbacks, and talk about the hazards involved.
(1) Waterproof Acrylic and Its Uses:
Waterproof acrylic is the most widely used acrylic paint. It can withstand the elements but isn’t so ideal as waterproof paint (in other words: it doesn’t go through wet locations). The reason for this is that a lot of the problems encountered with waterproof paint are caused by poor adhesion of the paint to the surface and by its water permeability (pH).
One of the important features of the polyurethane films applied to the backside of acrylic paints and the backs of its brushes that allow the paint to penetrate the surface is that these films don’t seal completely against the water. What’s worse is that they don’t completely seal against the heat of the paint in the paint pot. This causes water to leak in and around the surface.
The reason why waterproof paints are prone to dry areas is that acrylic paints have a very thick film that can’t be removed if the air in the pot gets dry (because when a new paint is applied it doesn’t have time to reach the surface). The thick waterproof acrylic film also makes the application more difficult.
Since acrylic paints don’t have the necessary adhesion to the clay surface, they usually are used during the drying process where the paint and clay mixture can be brought together and blended to a finished thickness and a smooth surface.
The drying process of waterproof paints (like paint sold by most manufacturers) is generally very easy and involves only a few steps, however, these steps could be avoided by a very thin layer of water and the use of a very thin clay mixture to dry the paint. This step will ensure that no water will reach the surface of the paint.
