A former employee at a Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) ticketing center has filed a lawsuit against the company in Florida federal court.
In a lawsuit filed in Seminole County District Court Tuesday, the worker alleges that his employment was terminated on July 26. In his lawsuit, the former employee, identified as Paul R. to protect his identity, says he was terminated for filing a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against the TSA.
“Mr. R. has been suffering from a terminal illness and has no work for which he might work without suffering ill-effects that will adversely affect his health, safety and welfare,” the lawsuit says.
A spokesman for FLL said he could not comment on pending litigation. TSA declined to comment further.
According to a U.S. Office of Special Counsel Report, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) faces a number of lawsuits alleging violations of federal anti-discrimination laws. The TSA maintains that the complaints are not actionable.
TSA spokesman Tom Hall confirmed in an email that R. had filed a lawsuit against the airport.
According to The Associated Press, R. worked at the LKSA ticketing facility from July 2011 until February 2013, when he left the facility after getting sick.
“I have been sick since I worked there. I had a lot of symptoms,” R. said in a lawsuit filed in October 2013. “My health was in jeopardy, my health was deteriorating. The sickness was debilitating. I was not able to maintain a steady work schedule and I was in a constant struggle to do so.”
