One of the most interesting questions that comes up, is that while we’ve all become aware in the last 10, 20 years that artists are getting better at writing, directing and creating music, what is really interesting to me, is how we’ve forgotten how. At least a few artists have done a great job of showing people over the last five to 10 years.
Now, to me, what’s interesting to me is to see other artists who aren’t so big-shot guys in the spotlight, but they’re making great music.
That’s cool. You had a great comment in this magazine a while ago, and I’m gonna copy, “I don’t know if it means it’s not a great art form, as some people might think it, or if it means that it’s just not a ‘real’ art form”. You could say that about any art form really, right? Art has to have a real purpose beyond just being just an expressive medium.
I’ve written a lot about how to make your music as expressive as possible. You may be a big star, but if your art isn’t expressive, it will disappear, because it will disappear with your friends and your fans. That’s not to say I don’t like that music, and I listen to a lot of it, but there is something to be said about how you express yourself as an artist. Are artist’s brains different?
There are definitely lots of things, like the way I write music. My music is kind of a big, big mess. There is no rhyme or reason, it really doesn’t have a point and feel. I don’t know if all musicians do that, but when I started out I didn’t consciously realize there that there was no point to my music. I just knew that everything was just a bunch of lines. My whole approach to music, the way I write it, is to go into something in the middle, I write like that because I write in the middle, and I don’t even try to figure out like maybe how is it a good rhyme structure.
I always write to just feel and to feel and to feel some kind of way. If I want to have some of an emotion, because I don’t have one, I just write things that I feel. I never know if I’m doing it or not, but I really like that approach.
I’ve read your quotes before, and I feel like you’ve said it in a
