The former President Barack Obama says he supports a $15 minimum wage while also saying a higher federal minimum wage “is a better deal for workers and businesses than trying to give employers a huge tax break by raising the price of entry to the labor force.”

He also told the Wall Street Journal that an extra $10.10 an hour would be a “very good deal” for companies and workers.

The Journal says that the former president has long spoken with the AFL-CIO and has long believed a higher minimum wage could help the economy.

But he took a much more nuanced position on the policy in an interview with ABC News’ David Muir.


The Associated Press reports:

“Obama says people working full-time should be paid at least $10.10 an hour and called the Obama administration’s focus on a higher minimum wage – not a higher income tax, higher corporate tax, or raising the poverty line – a “distraction” from solving the nation’s job and income inequality problem.”

In his interview with Muir last week, Obama also argued against the idea of raising the minimum wage while arguing for “flexibility” in the way companies do business. He also called for an increase in the overtime threshold for millions of Americans who make up a significant portion of the minimum wage workforce.

As AP reports, “Obama also called for a review of a proposal by some Democratic governors to raise their state’s minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour and said he supported a federal minimum wage hike of $10.10.”
