There’s no reason that David Blaine can’t do this same thing. All you have to do is go to YouTube and Google the word ‘knitting needle trick’ and then look for the videos for the video below, where the instructions are explained. Then just repeat the process as outlined to make it easier.

What about needle sizes/thread count?

The first time I tried this, I didn’t think to stop and get myself a pair of needles. The only thing that would get the work done was to go into the bathroom and wash everything in cold water. There was a lot of work involved with this first attempt, and I certainly wasn’t ready for them to be at my disposal every couple of months.

I ended up experimenting with different sizes when the yarn got a little thinner. I didn’t really make any progress until I found the perfect number and length. For example, the video below shows me making a basic lace pattern. I decided to make it in a 16″/46 cm gauge (I used a 32″/80 cm circular needle), adding just one stitch in my work each time. The pattern worked great, but after only 4 stitches, I realized how annoying it was to carry my yarn around everywhere. A couple of times, while working on the stitch pattern, I would find myself struggling to get it back to where I remembered it being when I left the finished piece. I ended up cutting it in half and cutting and crocheting another piece.

It doesn’t seem to matter where you choose to start and when. Even though I have a set of 10 5-inch (12.5 cm) elastic ear plugs, after every other ear, I still ended up wearing them. So I stopped wearing them and added a piece of 3/8″ (6.3 mm) elastic around my ear lobes and I feel much better!

Does everything come out the same every time?

For this project, there’s a lot to think about, but I find that just the beginning of a project makes the most progress. This is why it’s crucial to put down all your thoughts and just start. It’s amazing how many different things you can do with just a few stitches. Also, it takes a lot of patience. This project takes a few hours to complete, but I haven’t put in an extra thing to make it faster.

The finished product looks much nicer than mine, and it doesn’t look any different than an ordinary
