(Reuters) – In a first of its kind, North American automakers such as Toyota Motor (7203.T) , BMW Motorrad (BMWG.DE) and Honda Motor will be able to sell their cars in a network of self-service grocery stores in New York state, under a bill signed by Albany Governor Andrew Cuomo on Thursday.

The measure, which also allows for food delivery, was one of several measures to aid the struggling economy. Gov. Cuomo also signed legislation that requires retail chains, both chains and convenience stores, to offer their workers the option of paid sick leave, as well as a package of other benefits that could benefit the economy.
For auto sales, Cuomo said the goal is to “create a better car-buying experience for consumers. In the spirit of cooperation between the auto industry and the state of New York, the auto industry, the state of New York, and the cities of New York and New Jersey, we’re working together to set up this program and to create new ways to get you into local supermarkets.”
While New York has one of the nation’s lowest unemployment rates, the auto industry is struggling to cope with an aging fleet of vehicles. While other states were beginning to embrace self-service retail grocery stores, New York has been slow to change course.
In the past two decades, only one other state has done so: Massachusetts.
The state has faced increased scrutiny regarding its labor practices in the wake of a series of suicides of construction workers by their colleagues at Ford Motor Co’s plant in nearby Auburn Hills, Michigan. The UAW, though the largest union that represents U.S. auto workers, has yet to endorse such a system, though it has previously called for a pilot program in the state.
In May, Mayor Bill de Blasio was criticized for not having enough employees working in his office to serve food and other necessities for public employees, prompting a protest that drew over 150,000 people.
