A few days ago, an article was published on the website of the Indian magazine, The Statesman (Indian-American newspaper). “Weird, But True: The Dangers of Having a Hindu Wife in India”, an article written by Pratap Chatterjee, a sociologist of religion from the University of Pennsylvania, is a highly fascinating read.
“In India, being an Indian is the equivalent of being white. This is true both for the upper and the lower classes. The lower classes have access to greater opportunities in social, economic and political spheres and yet, are still subject to the limitations set forth in their religion,” says the article. “Weird, but true.”
The most common myth is that India is predominantly Hindu but that its population is a mix of different religions. This is a major problem for many, including academics who study religions. “It is very difficult to determine the percentage of Hindus in any country because so many religions exist there,” says Jeyaswamy Dasgupta, professor of Sanskrit, University of Cambridge. “But India is certainly the highest Hindu country in the world, and I don’t think it has any other comparable religion.”
Another problem is the perception that the Muslim population is growing because of its economic advantages over Hindus. In 2013, a report by the US government found that the total population of Muslims in the US was 4 million but was a mere 5.85% of the total population of the US. Similarly, the percentage of Hindus in Maharashtra and Karnataka stands at 2% and 2.2%, respectively. But this number masks a bigger issue: the demographic imbalance the two states have created in states such as Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, where the Muslim population is growing strongly and where Muslim representation in the National Assembly has not yet reached the levels of the
