How do I get into video editing? – What Makes A Good Videographer

This is probably the single hardest question to answer because I honestly don’t have it figured out yet. I hope that this post will help you with your journey. If you really want to get into video editing, here are my top 5 tips from over a year of getting into the business:

Do the research first

If you’re serious about video editing, you need to understand the basics of video editing – the technology, the terminology, the editing tools that are available to you. Take time to research and understand what video editing is and how it will affect your video production. I went through a ton of research before I got into video editing.

Be patient

Just because you’re new to video editing doesn’t mean that you’re not going to make progress. It takes time, patience and focus to learn. The reason that I like to describe video editing this way is because it is such a long process. I feel like I have the benefit of time and a good mentor in the background to help me along. This is great, but please DO NOT give yourself too much pressure.

Take ownership

If you’re going to be doing video editing for a long time, take ownership of the process. Have a set schedule for how you want to work on the projects. You’re probably not going to be a pro by the time you’re ready to make a video for a living. So, I advise you to take control of the process and start making videos right now. If you’re doing video for a hobby, or for entertainment, you should take advantage of that as well.

Be patient – we’re human!

We’re all busy with our own lives so take the little shortcuts that you can to make it easier. I know it’s hard to be “one step ahead” of video editing. We’re all busy! So take the shortcuts that would be easy to do when you have a full schedule and resources to develop video editing skills. This could mean using software like Premiere Pro or using YouTube as a resource
