It’s a common belief that there is a clear answer to this question, but that’s simply not the case. BTS’ music is all over the internet and social media in the span of just a few weeks, and their rapid-fire, catchy and rousing rhymes are a testament to the group’s power. In fact, with a slew of impressive music videos to back their songs and impressive appearances on the likes of V Appetite and Big Hit Japan, the three members had quite the summer.
So, why don’t you rank BTS in your Top 3 Most Famous Koreans, along with the likes of Super Junior and 2NE1?
Well… because those three have more international influence. In terms of actual fame, you could argue BTS is better than most Korean musicians, especially considering their growing popularity internationally. But the only reason BTS doesn’t place higher in my list of Top 3 is because they aren’t the most popular of the five, and none (save T.O.P) are the most popular in Asia or the Pacific.
Why can’t you take a look at the list of top 5 Korean rappers and look at what their “influence” is across the globe? Do you count out the likes or other members of Super Junior? Do you consider them the most popular or the biggest?
Well, I was just looking at some charts back in the day, so I probably have some biases. There are definitely rappers who had their music reach international audiences over a long period of time and become worldwide sensations. In my mind, BTS are the only one of the group who has so far.
And in the end, it’s all about the music! So when you ask me if BTS is the most famous Korean hip hop group or not, that’s like asking me if I think K-pop has the best songwriting and I will say that it does, because there’s so much great K-pop out there!
Are you surprised by them being able to stand apart from the majority of Japanese artists and still maintain popularity?
That question is really hard to answer without actually speaking with the members. I really don’t know… I don’t even pay attention to it. But I still think that they are some of the best in the world. I think it’s more than just their music that has caught on outside of South Korea. They definitely had their own style, which helped people recognize them (and not just in
