Kanye West and Ludacris:
Kanye is the richest rapper, followed by Ludacris, who comes in third.
So, it might be true that people in the U.S. are being less charitable than average, but the majority of that is due to people in the U.S. not being aware how much it costs to help others.
The U.S. spends $1.8 billion each year just on providing food for those in need, according to the World Food Program. And while the federal poverty threshold is $13,841 for a family of four, the average household income to support a family of four is only $21,800, according to the government’s 2016 report on the American economy:
Of course, not everyone in America can afford to go above that line. But we can hope the U.S. will be a little more generous with their resources. Even the average American family is able to make an extremely generous contribution each month toward helping others.
It’s also worth noting that even if Americans in general were giving more than average, it wouldn’t explain the large disparity between how rich people and the next poorest family.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that in 2014, the median household income was $55,935, which means the median household got nearly $6,000 more from other Americans on their taxes and income taxes than they paid back, per the 2014 report, in which they noted that a median-income household also received roughly $5,000 more from Social Security and Medicare benefits than the taxes paid back. For a family headed by two people, one of whom is a single parent of no dependents, that’s an extra $3,000 to a couple’s combined tax returns.
The U.S. poverty rates have gotten worse over the years, largely due to an increase in poverty for people of color. But for people from all races and income levels, the poverty rate fell by a whopping 24 percent between 2010 and 2014, according to the Census. But the most important part of that decline, the most important part for understanding what’s happening to people in the U.S., was that the gap between the poorest and richest people narrowed significantly.
In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, during the Obama years, the poor were earning about $906 less a year during the same period. The top 10 percent of U.S. earners accounted for nearly
