“I would say that if I were in his position, would I want to be talking about a woman at that moment? And if the answer is no, then I would have to decide to take the matter to the next level and make sure I could have his full attention,” he said.
It’s a strange world we live in where some women are just naturally pretty, while the rest may have trouble picking them out from a lineup that is nearly devoid of attractive people (we still haven’t figured out a way to make women look good in less than 70-degrees) – or as some argue, that our brains are less accurate at reading facial symmetry than at reading facial beauty.
If symmetry is the cornerstone of being sexy, why can’t we just make the world slightly less ugly?
That’s the question author David Segal wants to tackle on Friday’s episode of his “Sexy in 5 Seconds” podcast with the host of the popular podcast Sexy People. Segal, author of The Beauty Myth and The Sexy Book, is here to talk about finding the perfect partner, so you won’t have to.
Segal, a professor of sociology at Duke University, is a sex researcher. He specializes in evolutionary psychology, which seeks to explain how humans became the way they are, and also examines why it is we might seek relationships that are incompatible with our evolutionary natures. He’s even interviewed David Beckham for Psychology Today. Segal and I started asking the same question more than 20 years ago. He was just beginning his career.
That original question was: “What happens when you change a human’s sexuality?”
David Segal: Exactly. People get asked that question all the time by psychologists all around the world.
There’s a famous story from the 1950s when I started going to Harvard University. It relates to sex researchers. In the mid-1950s, there was great concern that human sexuality was a disease. Now, when I go to schools, I have conversations with people about the dangers of homosexuality and masturbation. I have a woman come up to me and say, “I’ve been thinking about sex and I wonder if I’d have trouble meeting anybody if I weren’t a lesbian.” People go, “Oh gosh.”
