The USA-funded grant is a collaborative effort by scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Harvard University, Yale University, the University of Florida and the University of California, San Diego.
How are the scientists funded?
The scientists have been working in collaboration with a team of Salk graduate researchers at UC San Diego, as well as the Salk Institutes of Biology in Batavia, New York and San Diego, California.
How are the researchers planning on using the funds?
The funding focuses on a number of important goals, including expanding understanding of the mechanism of cell division, developing new immunotherapies and therapies directed at cells and macrophages that have a role in organ transplant rejection, and identifying molecular changes in cell populations that can be targeted to treat various types of cancers, such as breast and prostate cancer.
Is this a research project funded by the NIH?
No, this is not the first time a scientist from Salk University has worked with a team at a university in the UK. The funding was funded by a fellowship from the Medical Research Council to the same group and the Salk collaborators received support from the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
What other organizations are working with your research study?
Salk and its collaborators are working on a team of studies that will focus on cancer. In one of these studies, the work is based on the Salk Center to Translocate Tumor Cells, which was established in 1995 with the collaboration of the University of California, Davis Clinical Institute and Salk. In another study, a research team was to look at cellular stress proteins, which are associated with several types of cancers. The Salk team is also involved in multiple studies to determine how the immune system has changed over the years in a cancer patient.
How will this research be disseminated?
The research will be published and discussed in the scientific literature and will be presented at national, international and international conferences and at continuing medical education conferences and meetings on a worldwide basis.
What about patients with cancer?
The work performed at the Salk Institute will help to define biological mechanisms of how cancer cell differentiation and migration happen and will inform novel therapies and immunotherapies to target cancer cells and their target cells in the body, which may be helpful for patients.
