(That’s a good question, though I honestly don’t know the answer to that.)
The New York Times just reported that President Donald Trump has directed the director of the FBI to investigate Michael Flynn’s potential ties to Russia as part of the ongoing probe into whether Trump’s campaign actively colluded with Russian officials.
“The president has directed the head of the FBI to look into the potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign as part of a widening investigation into links between the Trump campaign and Russian officials,” a U.S. official told the Times.
The Times’ report comes just after a report surfaced from Politico that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is planning to fire FBI Director James Comey, and that Trump had “expressed the hope that Mr. Comey would be dumped in favor of a more amenable figure.”
Flynn resigned as national security adviser earlier this month, just days after the first details of his contacts with the Russian ambassador surfaced, and it was revealed he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and White House officials about his contact with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
But, Trump has maintained his innocence regarding the matter, claiming he never knew of Flynn’s contacts with Kislyak.
“I didn’t know. I didn’t know. I didn’t know. The question is did he lie to the vice president? That’s the question,” he told reporters in May.
But according to the Times, there are now multiple investigations into any possible ties between Trump’s team and Russia, as well as possible obstruction of justice.
Forbes points out that, “The Washington Post first reported on the request from the president late Monday with no detail. The Times followed up with confirmation and more reporting today.”
Meanwhile, Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) has released yet another statement criticizing Comey’s firing.
“He had better hope that we never find out what he knows about General Flynn, because there’s going to come a time when all of us who worked with him, all of us who were a part of the senior team that he was with, should have to come forward and testify under oath what he knows,” King said.
“It’s a shame he got caught in this,” he said.
Trump has said he wants an investigation into whether Comey told the truth about his conversations with Trump. He also said he fired Comey because he was investigating his campaign’s interaction with Russia.
